90 % of all parents are unaware of symptoms of type 1 diabetes

Diabetes UK has published a survey of 1170 parents and 1053 of whom did not recognise the symptoms of type one diabetes. Symptoms include frequent urination, extreme fatigue, tiredness, excessive thirst and unexplained weight loss. This survey hopefully will raise awareness of the dangers of type 1 diabetes seriously ill with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life threatening condition which needs immediate specialist treatment in hospital.

One in four children & young people diagnosed

One in four children and young people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes unfortunately when they are in diabetic ketoacidosis stage, this is also common in 1 in 3 children which are diagnosed aged 5 and under.
