The History of Tuina Massage

Traditional Chinese Massage, Tuina, forms part of the rich patrimony of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and shares many of the same principles.

During the Xia dynasty between 2205 - 1766 BC, the majority of the instruments used to treat acupuncture points were made of stone or bone. During the same period, massage techniques were used as they were considered more hygienic and easier to apply than many other treatments.

In the Han dynasty, the doctor Zhang Zhong Jing, in his book ‘Jinkuiliao Ye' described what massage techniques were to be used in cases of emergency, together with the use of different oils.

Why would I need Tuina?

Considering the effectiveness of massage in the cure and prevention of illness and injury, it is not surprising to find that Tuina Massage has long been used in the gyms and temples of martial arts practitioners.

It is through the techniques of this massage that many osteoarticular conditions and injuries such as sprains, fractures and wounds in martial arts athletes are treated. Martial arts athletes are particularly susceptible to injuries which lead to the slowing down or stagnation of energy in the body leading to swelling and puffiness in the injured area. Tuina massage is particularly effective in activating the circulation of blood and energy by stimulating the nerve endings, thus relaxing the tissue and dissolving the pain.
Tuina is in fact an excellent method of deep detoxification for the body which increases the bodies defences.

Tuina massage, used as an integral part of an athletes training, supports martial art practitioners in two principle ways;

• By strengthening the bodies natural defences especially at times of intensive training when the body may be under pressure

• By offering a rapid course of rehabilitation in the case of injury.Where Can I get this treatment?

I was experiencing limited movement and great pain/stiffness in my shoulder. I visited Reza for my shoulder but ended up obtaining a more detailed consult regarding my liver and digestion. I now experience full movement in my shoulder and I also have a better diet improved energy and digestion. I fully recommend visiting Reza, he has a profound knowledge base and is highly skilled at what he does. I found the whole experience amazing.
