Let me introduce myself, my name is Jonathan Santry; I am an instructor in self protection, martial arts (including Tai Chi), personal fitness and exercise on prescription for people referred by their GP.

Currently, I am working in schools and colleges in your area. In St James RC High School, for example, I run self-protection courses, which cover aspects of PE, PSHE and the Science curriculum. Additionally, I offer various activities for after school clubs, including self protection, physical fitness, Tai Chi, Traditional Karate and Kick Boxing. I am a Stockport MBC's Registered Coach (CRB checked), certified by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REP's), first aid trained, fully qualified martial arts instructor with over 20 years experience and have represented England on numerous occasions in competition (WKA, WAKO).

Briefly, I have designed three courses aimed at Key Stage 2 and Secondary pupils. All these courses can be adapted to suit your pupil's needs and I always endeavour to facilitate the needs of all pupils, including children with special education needs.

Course 1 includes (4 hours approx) - environmental awareness, the recognition of safe and dangerous situations, threat awareness and avoidance, warning signs in confrontation, verbal dissuasion techniques, controlling ones distance, understanding and dealing with the effects of adrenalin, self protection and the law.

Course 2 (Assistant coach may be required) (4 hours approx) - an introduction to physical self-protection training, plus further work on the psychology of confrontation and the law governing self-protection.

Course 3 (Secondary only and assistant instructor required) (4 hours approx) - moves on to advanced self protection and physical techniques.

I also offer a separate self protection course for staff, please ask for details.

  • All my courses involve physical exercise; their content also has an intrinsic appeal for many students and thus can usefully address a number of the public health issues, which presently concern our government. Other benefits may include-
  • Improvement in understanding own behaviour and impact on others, autonomous physical responses, self confidence and self reliance.
  • A growth in respect for others.
  • The acquisition of non-violent strategies for managing conflict.
  • The acquisition of verbal and behavioural techniques for diffusing tension in most social settings.
  • The chance of a corresponding reduction of the need for aggression.

Course timetabling and session length is flexible and can be tailored to meet your requirements (Minimum two hour booking). I can take one class per session, if multiple classes are required at the same time, an assistant coach, who is first aid trained and CRB checked would be required.
