50 stone man with a possible metabolic disorder forced to remove majority of his stomach

A 50-stone man, who has shed 20 stone, says he hopes he will qualify for follow-up surgery on the NHS. Zac smith travelled to India to receive bariatric surgery here he had the majority of his stomach removed to stop his overeating.
obesity surgery shows they gradually put weight back on over time

Weight-loss surgeon Professor John Baxter said studies of patients who have had obesity surgery show they gradually put weight back on over time, so continuing dietary support is essential. However, Chepstow-based nutritionist and author Zoe Harcombe tells the programme: “We cannot exercise away the junk we are putting into our bodies.” She said she believes current UK government advice on what to eat is over-complicated and “180-degrees wrong”. She calls for the Welsh government to change its advice to something simpler, for instance to eat “real” rather than “processed” food.

It’s not a matter so much of what they consume its how the body behaves

Metabolic disorder is common in many people though mainstream medicine has ignored this unusual behaviour in the body for many years. In 1963-65 Dr ATW Simeons published his findings in the British Lancet.
He observed prisoners who had been starved in concentration camps given standard British Army food (ration packs) and gained weight?

Dr Simeons went on to identify the gland in the brain as the key to the problem. He also went on to find a cure to the problem. He chose to practice his treatment/protocol in a clinic in Rome Italy until his death in 1970. During this period he treated hundreds of wealthy and famous individuals who all insisted confidentiality which prevented Simeons from revealing his research findings.

They were however encapsulated in a piece of written work called “pounds & inches” released after his death.
Dr Simeons was a renowned researcher and till this day this wonderful life changing protocol is not recognised by the mainstream ( in UK & USA) in my opinion due to the fact it will upset a multi billion pound industry.

Stress related illness increases through recession

According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Nottingham and University of Ulster, work related stress increases by 40% during a recession, affecting 1 in 4 workers. Furthermore, researchers found that the number of workers who take time off, as a result of work-related stress, increased by 25%, and that total time off, as result of this type of stress, rose by more than one third during an economic downturn. The study is published today in the scientific journal, Occupational Medicine.

The results act as a wakeup call for employees and employers, during a time when forecasts of Britain’s economic prospects indicate a ‘double-dip’ recession. According to claims made by The Society of Occupational Medicine, companies should use occupational health services or risk long term damage to their productivity.

Dr. Henry Goodall, President of the Society of Occupational Medicine, explained:

“Occupational health provision is even more important in times of recession as specialists can help with the stress caused by mounting workloads, organizational change and job uncertainty. We can help businesses look at how they manage stress levels and improve the working environment for workers.”

The researchers surveyed tens of thousands of civil servants in Northern Ireland in 2005 (before the recession), and again in 2009, whilst the economy was severely hit, and compared the findings.

The stigma associated with mental health issues

Dealing with a number of workers from many different sectors, there seems to be a fear of asking for help within the context of mental health disorders compared to physical injury, this is especially common within a corporate business environment.

Many workers we see here at The CTC corporate wellness centre find a relief from negative thought patterns or out dated belief systems & these same workers wonder why it took them so long to address these issues. Though it is the fear or worry that this call for help could intern effect or damage their career, so many suffer in silence until fatigue arises, seen most recently with the Chief executive of Loyds banking group falling ill to this common condition.

CTC corporate wellness

A sequence of negaitve thought patterns can be an easy problem to unlock, since many deppressed or stressed workers have a catalyst or core to their grievence which fuels their negative thought process, it is this trigger we search for when enbarking through a treatment program.

All Fake Bake skin care products and self tan products are paraben free!

Fakebake

Why Choose a Spray Tan?

Fake bake uses High column low pressure technology which makes for a professional smooth coverage of the skin.
The History:
Originated in the USA in 1995 and was the first self-tan to combine naturally derived tanning agents DHA and Erythulose-=guaranteeing longer lasting (up to 50% longer) more natural-looking results.
DHA ( Dihydroxyacetone)
DHA interacts with the amino acid Keratin found in the upper most layer of your skin. This tan develops rapidly, but is also most temporary as your skin cells are worn away.

Erythulose

DHA and Erythulose do the same thing- Erythulose is a ketose which reacts with the amino acid- Keratin in the skin. Erythulose used on its own has to be applied daily and It never develops a dark tan. However when combined with DHA, they work together to reduce streaking and mis-colouring for a natural looking tan. They also make your tan last longer and fade evenly for a continuously natural appearance

DMI

Present in the airbrush, is a new booster ingredient formulated to improve the delivery of DHA, making it penetrate faster and deeper into the upper surface of your skin, resulting in a longer lasting tan.
The retail range was an instant success with both beauty experts and celebrity endorsements. The major trigger to its rapid rise of the fakebake phenomenon was when the New York Times voted it the No.1 self tanner (tested against 22 other self-tans).

What makes FakeBake unique?

The use of advanced botanical ingredients; that have enabled the removal of parabens and artificial preservatives from the product.

What are Parabens and their effects?

Parabens are a group of synthetic chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
Why do Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Companies use Preservatives?
Most cosmetic products found on the shelves of cosmetic shops, have to meet certain safety requirements regarding the sale of their products. Legislation requires that the contents of most cosmetic products have a shelf life of a minimum of 5 years and for this reason most products will contain some type of preservative.
Research surrounding Preservatives in cosmetics:
Studies have found that the biggest risk from parabens seems to be from the use of products that require prolonged exposure to skin, such as creams and facial lotions. The longer that the parabens are on the skin, the more opportunity there is for parabens to be absorbed. When in skin care products, parabens are absorbed directly into the blood stream.
One type of paraben – methylparaben – has also been linked to the premature ageing of skin. A study undertaken in japan indicated that certain cosmetic products may cause the skin to age excessively when exposed to ultra-violet rays. Ironically, this compound can be commonly found in products designed to fight the effects of ageing. Some tests have indicated that parabens have caused an increase in oestrogen which can possibly affect the male and female reproductive organs. Some studies in men have shown that low sperm count and a decrease in testosterone are directly related to the intake of parabens.

One of the biggest areas of concern is the effects of parabens on breast cancer. Several studies have found traces of parabens in women with breast cancer. There seems little doubt that parabens can affect breast tissue- but whether they actually increase the possibility of breast cancer is still uncertain.

To be totally free of these cancer-linked toxic preservatives look for:
-Para- hydroxybenzoic acid.
-Benzylparaben
-Butyl
-Isobutylparaben
-Propyl
-Ethyl parabens

The advantages of a faking it!

Self tan is totally safe whereas –UV tanning damages the DNA in the skin which causes premature ageing of the skin, eye damage, affects the immune system and causes skin cancer.

Self tan gives instant results, whereas UV tanning takes time to build.

Self tan can give the palest of skin tones a sun-kissed hue whereas UV will cause them to freckle and burn.

Self tan leaves the skin nourished, softer and smoother; Whereas UV tanning if over exposed can leave the skin very sore and burnt, requiring medical treatment.

How to treat ADHD effectively

Joseph, a five year old boy diagnosed with ADHD, was making good progress in yoga class at school. He was coming to friendship group once a week, and his mom and dad were working with me [Lynea] on parenting skills.

For Joseph, change came slowly but consistently. He had learned how to catch himself when excited and ask for help. His breathing practice was more rhythmic and controlled. His parents were learning how to help him regulate his emotions.

Then he was put on medication for ADHD. The results were quick and impressive. He was instantly calmer and more capable of focusing in class. Parenting and teaching him were both a lot easier. But it also seemed like he’d lost some of his fire and passion.

Soon after, Joseph stopped attending yoga and friendship group. His mom and dad stopped coming for parenting classes.

Deciding whether to medicate a child is a big decision. It can give a kid the chance to experience life without anxiety and social conflict. Sometimes, medication is absolutely necessary. But often, there’s an unfortunate side effect: parents drop the skills-training and other support they were providing their child. And their child gets the message loud and clear: When you’re struggling, use medicine. No need to keep practicing your friendship skills or learning tools for attention and how to self-regulate. Put all your faith in the pills.

Yet, as L. Alan Sroufe, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Child Development, noted in a recent op-ed in the New York Times, ADHD drugs offer a short-term solution at best.

Attention-deficit drugs increase concentration in the short term, which is why they work so well for college students cramming for exams. But when given to children over long periods of time, they neither improve school achievement nor reduce behavior problems. The drugs can also have serious side effects, including stunting growth.

* * *

To date, no study has found any long-term benefit of attention-deficit medication on academic performance, peer relationships or behavior problems, the very things we would most want to improve.

But in 2009, findings were published from a well-controlled study that had been going on for more than a decade, and the results were very clear. The study randomly assigned almost 600 children with attention problems to four treatment conditions. Some received medication alone, some cognitive-behavior therapy alone, some medication plus therapy, and some were in a community-care control group that received no systematic treatment. At first this study suggested that medication, or medication plus therapy, produced the best results. However, after three years, these effects had faded, and by eight years there was no evidence that medication produced any academic or behavioral benefits.

Indeed, all of the treatment successes faded over time, although the study is continuing. Clearly, these children need a broader base of support than was offered in this medication study, support that begins earlier and lasts longer.

The skills and strategies we teach in Yoga Calm, of course, aim to provide just this kind of support. Its unified, whole-child approach helps counselors, therapists and other professionals address children’s physical, mental and emotional development needs. Over time, the desired effect of drugs like Ritalin, Adderall and Strattera fade, while undesired effects – i.e., side effects – remain. But when we provide opportunities for kids to develop self-awareness, focus and social skills; when we safely address underlying issues of stress and trauma; when we instill and support healthy habits, we provide them with a body of skills, knowledge and experience they can draw on for the rest of their lives.

And we see this especially with children who have weaknesses in attention and impulse control – just as we saw with Joseph.

But what children need, above all, writes noted ADHD specialist Dr. Edward Hallowell, is

a loving, safe, and richly connected childhood. The long-term study that Dr. Sroufe cited in his opinion piece does indeed show that over time, medication becomes a less important force in a child’s improvement and that human connections become ever more powerful. It is good and heartening to know that human connection — love — works wonders over time. Love is our most powerful and under-prescribed “ medication.” It’s free and infinite in supply, and doctors most definitely ought to prescribe it more!

This doesn’t mean that, as Dr. Sroufe say[s], Ritalin has “gone wrong.” We may go wrong in how we use it, when we over-prescribe it, or when we use it as a substitute for love, guidance, and the human connection.

Indeed, continuing on the current path of biasing treatment approaches toward pills while ignoring proven and complementary behavioral interventions carries some serious risks, says Sroufe:

First, there will never be a single solution for all children with learning and behavior problems. While some smaller number may benefit from short-term drug treatment, large-scale, long-term treatment for millions of children is not the answer.

Second, the large-scale medication of children feeds into a societal view that all of life’s problems can be solved with a pill and gives millions of children the impression that there is something inherently defective in them.

Finally, the illusion that children’s behavior problems can be cured with drugs prevents us as a society from seeking the more complex solutions that will be necessary. Drugs get everyone — politicians, scientists, teachers and parents — off the hook. Everyone except the children, that is.

Consider Joseph, 10 years after first being given medication. He’s now 15. His relationship with his parents is tense. He wants more freedom. They want him to focus on school and get a part time job. As he’s grown, doctors increased his dosage. Since his latest growth spurt, he’s noticed that he feels anxious and is having a hard time paying attention in class. After an argument with his girlfriend, a friend offers him some drugs to help him mellow out.

What have we, as a culture, taught Joseph to do?

E counselling increases wellbeing,, though wellness can be better maximized in person

A report written in “new medical” and administered by the Canadian cardiovascular counsel stated that online counselling or E counselling helped increase well being in patients.

The article stated that E Counselling can significantly lower blood pressure, improve lifestyle and enhance quality of life, says Heart and Stroke Foundation researcher Dr. Robert Nolan.

“E-counselling has the potential to strengthen the effects of medical treatment for high blood pressure,” Dr. Nolan told the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which is co-hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. “We found that it led to an almost double decrease in the blood pressure levels of participants compared to those who did not receive the e-counselling.”

Dr. Nolan and his team from the University Health Network, University of Western Ontario and the Ontario Public Health Unit in Grey Bruce evaluated Heart&Stroke Health eSupport, a Heart and Stroke Foundation personalized action plan and e-mail support program developed to help people control their blood pressure and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The researchers found that e-counselling motivates people to stay on track with diet and exercise plans, which leads to lower blood pressure.

The moods of people coping with high blood pressure also improved while they were participating in the e-counselling program. Depression is known to have an adverse effect on patients with high blood pressure, says Dr. Nolan. It causes them to lose interest in eating healthy foods and exercising – two lifestyle choices that can significantly improve their health. “Knowing this, we wanted to look at the effect of e-counselling in terms of improving lifestyle behaviours, as well as decreasing blood pressure.”

The study evaluated 387 people ranging in age from 45 to 74, over a four-month period. All had been diagnosed with high blood pressure and 72 per cent were taking one or more blood pressure medications.

One group was sent a standard e-newsletter from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, containing heart health information and general tips to manage their health. The second group received eight emails over four months that provided both educational information as well as motivational messages.

Prior to receiving the emails, the second group filled out surveys identifying what they wanted to change about their lifestyle, such as quitting smoking, improving their diet, or being more physically active. The emails then addressed their individual concerns and included tailored suggestions and personal encouragement to help them achieve their goals.

Participants in the study who received these emails recorded approximately double the amount of decrease in blood pressure, compared to subjects who received just the newsletter, Dr. Nolan reported.

“We found the e-counselling was associated with an improvement in both exercise and diet behaviour. The motivational component was therapeutic,” said Dr. Nolan. “E-tools to promote healthy lifestyles are becoming an established success – it’s the way of the future.”

Empathy can not be felt online

The ability of a counsellor is not only to listen & empathise with their client, it is to read their body language and know when it is a time to address the information they have been told or to keep listening.

Sam Phillis our resident counselor here at the Cenacle Treatment Centre stipulated that:

“there is a sense of detachment to online counselling where i believe empathy is not an online concept”.

We are a nation of convenience and speed though with emotion and negative thought patterns, these need to be given time they need to find that moment of clarity. This is unlikely when you have to type to address these feeling, where in a real or one to one counselling session the therapist can understand empathise and began to take the session to its next stage of progression.

Prenatal yoga takes place at The Cenacle Treatment Centre on Monday evenings 6.30 PM to 8 P.M.. Ladies are welcome to join the class from 14 weeks of pregnancy however it is up to each individual to decide when they would like to join.

From my experience it is preferable to join the class before 32 weeks of pregnancy as it allows more time to practice and master some of the valuable breathing techniques for labour, and to benefit from the stress busting relaxations on offer every week that can help to encourage restful sleep.

The cost is £6 per lesson or £30 for a block of 6 lessons booked in advance.
I hope that this information is useful and please contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

TCM Pregnancy Care

Congratulations! You are pregnant!

We would like to recommend acupuncture as a wonderful therapy to help you maintain optimal health throughout your pregnancy.

Being pregnant can be troublesome as disturbed Qi occurs during pregnancy. Serious conditions like miscarriage may happen in certain cases. Acupuncture is a drug-free therapy, which makes it ideal for a wide range of problems throughout pregnancy.

To nourish the mother is to nourish the child.

Regular balancing acupuncture throughout pregnancy enhances the health of the mother, prevents complications and influences the development of the baby.

The First Trimester: (0-12 weeks)

Weekly pregnancy acupuncture is highly recommended at this stage. During the first trimester, there is a risk of miscarriage and an even higher risk with IVF pregnancies or cases where there has been recurrent miscarriage. Acupuncture is also a great solution to morning sickness which may occur at this stage.

The Second Trimester: (13-28 weeks)

During this stage we only offer acupuncture on pregnancy-related symptoms. It is our best wishes that we don’t see you during this time. Still, bear in mind, acupuncture can be your choice in many cases.

The Third Trimester: (29-40 weeks)

There are two parts of protocol during this stage.

First, we continue the theme from the second trimester. Acupuncture is on demand for pregnancy-related symptoms. What’s worth mentioning here is the amazing effect of acupuncture on turning breech babies.

The second part, which is also a very important part, is pre-birth acupuncture. We highly recommend weekly acupuncture from week 36 onwards in the final 4 weeks of pregnancy.

It is joyful to see expectant moms healthy and relaxed through this special time of their lives. What’s even better is that we are still here for you after childbirth.

Postpartum is an ideal time to use Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture to reactivate, rebuild and rebalance the body. More often the emphasis is on nourishing Qi and Blood, harmonizing Yin and Yang.

The restoration of women’s health after childbirth is not only imperative for their own well being and for their abilities to be present for their newborns, but also important to boost their confidence facing their new lives.

Licence fees collected by fertility regulator from clinics could fund 1,000 free treatment cycles

Britain’s fertility regulator has run up a surplus of more than £3m from charges imposed on the clinics it licenses, enough to provide 1,000 free cycles of IVF treatment on the NHS.

The unspent funds raised by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) mean hundreds of NHS patients cannot get the treatment they need to help them have a baby.

The authority charges a £75 fee on every IVF treatment, which is paid either by the patient, if they are treated privately, or by the clinic if they are being treated on the NHS. If the charges had been waived for NHS clinics, more patients could have been treated.

The HFEA licenses 132 clinics, which pay an average of £36,000 a year each in charges. These have contributed to a surplus of £3.4m, which is more than half the organisations’ annual budget of £6.2m.

The HFEA said it had built up the surplus as a result of “prudent” budgeting. It said it had expected the number of treatment cycles to fall because of the recession and the squeeze on the NHS budget; this would have led to a reduction in the authority’s income. Instead, demand for treatment has unexpectedly continued to increase.

In total, three-quarters of the HFEA’s budget comes from fees; the rest is provided by a grant from the Department of Health. In October, the HFEA cut its fees by 28 per cent and it now says its surplus will not continue to grow.

Metabolic disorder is common in many people though mainstream medicine has ignoredthis unusual behaviour in the body for many years.
